Our Thought Life

I was struck by something I read by Nicky Gumbel in his Bible Plan (Day 243) this morning.  He pointed out that:  “If you know how to worry, you know how to meditate!  All you need to do is change what you think about and you will be practising Christian  meditation.”

It was rather underlined when he said further on that the Psalmist prays:

“May my meditation be pleasing to him…”  Psalms 104:34 NIV

…and I thought of the many times we’re reminded in the Bible of the fact that we need to meditate on the Word of God.

Think about what you’re thinking about!”

I remember that, the first time I heard Joyce Meyer say this – I thought I’d mis-heard her.  But I’ve heard her say it many times since and, Yes, it’s exactly what she said.  And I’ve heard her explain it as well.  She says very clearly that we, that’s you and me, have a choice – and we can, in fact, choose what we spend our time thinking about.

The Power of Words

I’m sure you know that, just as we’re reminded in the Bible that we need to meditate on God’s Word; we are also informed of the power of the words that come out of our mouths.  And the damage those words can do!

Well, dear friends, in just the same way as the damage is done by the words we speak – the exact same thing can happen with our thoughts.  We can cause damage if we are always thinking wrong things about ourselves.  Or damage to others if we are always thinking ill of them.  More often than not, what we think eventually comes out of our mouths!

Pray With the Psalmist

My encouragement to all of you reading this, and to myself, is that we take notice of the advice from Joyce M – and take stock of what we are thinking about.

And then pray with the Psalmist, that our meditation will be pleasing to the Lord, meditating on His Word instead of thinking anxious thoughts – or any other lies that the enemy tries to feed us!

Be blessed 🙏❣️
