Knowing Your Inheritance
Tell me – do you know what your inheritance is as a child of God?
We read in Joshua 13 about various parts of land being given out by Moses to the different tribes of Israel.
Then we come to rather a surprising statement in the last verse of the chapter, stating that: “…..to the tribe of Levi, Moses gave no inheritance….”. So…. what had they done so as not to deserve being given any land? Bearing in mind that, in actual fact, the tribe of Levi was headed up at the beginning by Moses’ brother Aaron – the other main figure with Moses in the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. You’d think that they might have been in line for the best part of land that was going!
Well, as you might already be aware – there was a deliberate ‘catch’ in that question….
The Tribe of Levi, was actually the tribe chosen to look after – first of all the Ark and then, eventually, the Temple. They were responsible for all the sacrifices and the head of the tribe, starting with Aaron, was the High Priest.
The rest of that last verse in Joshua 13, tells us that: “… the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance…”
Now, I can hear you asking, what has that to do with us and our inheritance, as children of God? Well, you see, we are not only ‘children’ of God but, in 1 Peter 2:9, we’re specifically told that….
“….you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people…”
In fact, as God’s chosen, royal priesthood – we, that’s you and me, have been given Jesus as our inheritance. Just as we read that the tribe of Levi were given the Lord, the God of Israel, as their inheritance – only, because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we have been given the possibility of having a far deeper love relationship with Jesus when He comes and lives in us.
How wonderful is that – and what more could we possibly ask for?
Be blessed, encouraged – and make sure you enjoy, and are living, in your inheritance! 🙏❣️
